Stratigraphics, 2017 4 x (32 x 22) cm China Ink on paper Stratigraphic is a variation on the depiction of nature, as a pattern of abstract shapes. The geological layers, or "strata/ stracta", serve as a metaphor for ideas about the slow sedimentation and consequent archaeological recovery of hidden objects and fossils. What lies beneath, what belongs to a distant past, which moves in the background. But in this series, as in others of this exhibition, a singularity draws attention to the group of drawings. Where among the other series is a blank open space or an irregularity in the margins, in this series it is a darker and black drawing calling attention. This singularity signals not either a different or darker soil, but a space of interruption on the seemingly endless surface of things. No reason, no need to give an explanation, and no questions asked. Just a presence like a Sphinx. (I) |
